Under the Volcano

Saint Pierre

Saint Pierre is the original capital of Martinique, destroyed when Mont Pelée erupted in 1902. The beaches there are black sand. We stayed in a posh little B&B right on the water’s edge. Definitely the most elegant of the four places where we stayed in Martinique. The photo of Mont Pelée was taken on the day we tried to drive across the island on the “back roads”, found ourselves on The Jesuit Trail and then found that it was very much closed. On the morning we left Saint Pierre, we were sent on our way by a spectacular double rainbow.
