On the Road from Hewanorra Airport to Castries City, Saint Lucia
Our original goal for this vacation was to visit Martinique. But my research found no direct flights from New York City to Martinique. So we decided to fly to Saint Lucia and catch a puddle-jumper to Martinique.
This turned out to be a good plan … and we got to see another island too.
But there were three complications …
1. International flights use Hewanorra Airport at the South of Saint Lucia, while local Caribbean flights use the little airport in Castries City.
2. Castries City is a ninety minute taxi-ride from Hewanorra Airport. There is a bus service but it uses small minivan-type vehicles.
3. They do not let old people like me rent a car on Saint Lucia. Now that I have been there and seen the roads, I am not too unhappy about this!
Our Jet Blue plane from New York landed in the early afternoon and I decided that it would be fun to spend our first night near the airport and then catch a taxi the rest of the way to Castries the following morning. If nothing else, this made it easy to change our clothes soon after we arrived in the Caribbean, having left New York City at twenty or thirty degrees below freezing.
So we stayed the night at the Fox Grove Inn, just a short drive up the road from the airport. The inn is high in the hills with a swimming pool and a distant view of the Atlantic Ocean. If you want to find the Fox Grove Inn on Google Maps, the easiest way is to search for “Mamiku Gardens” which are just a short distance up the road.
