Puerto Vallarta ~ January 25
For Jana’s Birthday, we looked for a special place to have dinner. We chose the Vista Grill because this restaurant gets good reviews and because it is situated high up with a view across Puerto Vallarta’s roof-tops to the ocean and (hopefully) the sunset.
We took a taxi there and were very glad we did. The Vista Grill really is located high on the hillside “at the back of” Puerto Vallarta. The dining room takes full advantage of its location. It is set up on a series of terraces, all of which have great views. We arrived there at 5:15 so that we would be able to enjoy the sunset.
The dinner was very pleasant. The service was excellent. The food was good and the menu offered a good selection of dishes, many of which we had not seen at other restaurants in Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita. But we got the impression that the chef was trying too hard to create a “signature menu”. We enjoyed the evening but this was not by any means one of the best meals we had on this vacation.
Jana and I often prefer to share a main course. Otherwise, one appetizer each plus a main course is simply too much food. And we are not great fans of “doggy bags”. The Vista Grill offers a nice option: For most of their main courses, they offer a “smaller portion” version of the dish, which suited us just fine. Jana chose the catch of the day, which was very good. I decided to try a seafood risotto, which was a little disappointing.
If we are in Puerto Vallarta for some future special occasion, I think we would choose to have a “celebration dinner” at either Daiquiri Dicks, right on the beach, or at the beautiful River Cafe on Isla Cuale.
